Apple to Ditch QuickTime Pro w/ Snow Leopard?
February 9th 2009
MacRumors has a tidbit on a recent build of Mac OS X 10.6. Reportedly the options inside the bundled QuickTime, which are normally reserved for the paid Pro version, are no longer reserved. QuickTime Pro is currently a $29.99 upgrade.
The Pro version of QuickTime unlocks functions such as basic cut/paste editing, exporting to the full range of codecs supported by QuickTime, and saving Web-embedded videos where permitted.
Apple previously announced it will be shipping the new QuickTime X with Mac OS X 10.6. Current version of QuickTime is 7.6. This could be a departure from its QuickTime revenue stream, and perhaps a sign Apple either renegotiating or will just eat any licensing costs associated with the export ability. It's unclear whether QuickTime Pro will be gone completely, just for Mac OS X 10.6, or if this is just a fluke of the development process.
