Apple Flash RAM feeding frenzy points to new devices
April 9th 2009
If you haven't heard, Apple is thought to be releasing at least one new iPhone this summer. There may be some new iPods too.
A report from DigiTimes notes Apple is scooping up large orders of memory components for something. The industry rumor site is saying Apple bought up 100 million 8 Gb NAND flash chips, mostly from Samsung. Such big purchases are expected to put pressure on chip supplies for other vendors. As a result, prices have shot up 16% for the first half of April. Supplies are expected to be tight through May.
The 8 Gb chips are presumably assembled into larger modules for desired sizes.
