Developers get first look at iPhone OS 3.1

Apple has released the next installment of the iPhone OS for developers.

Quickpwn has some highlights of what we should expect to see in the first major update to iPhone OS 3.0. The 3.1 beta release was posted for developers on Tuesday.

3.1 looks to add further video editing controls. One shortcoming of 3.0 release was destructive editing, meaning and edit permanently altered your original media. So, if you trimmed a clip, what was snipped was gone for good. Apple appears to be addressing this by letting users save a separate copy of the video before editing. Two other video developments, the software developer kit now includes two API to connect to the video editing.

Another big development is 3.1 reportedly adds Voice Control over Bluetooth. Presumably this will allow callers to use their Bluetooth headsets to initiate Voice Control commands.

MMS messaging is enabled, but doesn't work for AT&T. Perhaps this release will come after AT&T gets its house in order regarding MMS for its customers, or perhaps this release will be part of that activation.

The last two tidbit worth noting are unspecified improvements to OpenGL and Quartz, and the UI tweak of adding a vibration when moving icons.
