New Nike+ GPS app maps your workouts, doesn't require sensor
September 7th 2010
Over the weekend a new Nike+ GPS app hit the iTunes store. The app appears to largely replace the existing Nike+ workout system. In the process it adds mapping of your workout and no longer requires the small shoe sensor. In place of the sensor, the app utilizes the iPhone or iPod Touch's accelerometer to pace your progress.
Workouts can be mapped (iPhone only) to show your traveled route and workouts can be transmitted to the Nikeplus.com site. The app still offers old Nike+ features such as voice feedback of your progress and PowerSong.
Note that the new iPod Nano supports the Nike+ system, and even though you'll have to buy the sensor, it could still be attractive option. The Nano is significantly smaller and lighter than an iPhone and iPod Touch, and using the GPS radio while running will certainly take a toll on the device battery life.
The Nike+ GPS app sells for $1.99 and requires an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or iPod Touch 2G, 3G, or the new 4G running iOS 4.
