Comcast announces 2Gb Internet services to 7 states

ArsTechnica:

The residential service costs $299.95 per month, and "fees of up to $500 for installation and up to $500 for activation apply," Comcast said on its website. "Equipment, taxes and fees, and other applicable charges" will also boost the overall cost.

Promotional pricing could cut that down to $159/mo for the first three years. Also, the fees may be lower depending on your location to the fiber backbones. Also, the service requires a two year agreement.

Initially the Gigabit Pro service is in select markets, but the roll out seems decent. Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, and California. Obviously the audience would seem to be limited to serious users and/or happy to burn money with Comcast. Note that this doesn't include any other Comcast offerings, which will be on top of the fees. At least though there are no data caps.

I had their 100 Mb service for a while and basically determined I'm not really seeing the benefit over their 50 Mb service. I downgraded and really haven't noticed much. While Comcast can show some impressive speed tests when servers are on their own network, actual Internet usage isn't that fast. Some day, perhaps, but seems the connections to the tubes don't make such upgrades worthwhile. Yet.
