DVD-R 'More Compatible' than DVD+R
February 11th 2004
DVD-R has better than 96% compatibility with DVD players and DVD-ROM players, says a comparison conducted by CDR Info.
By contrast, DVD+R, the rival format, worked in only 87.32% of players, the article says. The tests have been published in detail, including technical background to the testing.
Over 1,000 combinations of drive, media and player underwent testing. CDR Info says that this establishes that DVD-R is "clearly" the most compatible format on the market.
The test conclusions are that "for customers who wish to create content on a DVD writer and interchange this with other PC drives and consumer DVD players, DVD-R is the clear format of choice."
Analysis: With more and more Dual (-r/+R) drives on the market, the DVD wars are less potent than they were previously. However, the tests clearly show that if users want to ensure maximum compatibility, using DVD-R media is the way to go. It also possibly explains why Apple has been reluctant to embrace the rival +R/+RW format, particularly for consumer apps and machines, like iDVD and iMac/eMac.
