SuperBowl: Napster Has Apple in its Sights

As Apple preps are new SuperBowl iTunes promotion, rival Napster will deliver slings and arrows in a new TV advertisement aimed at dissing iTunes, USAToday reports.

Napster is launching its Napster To Go service Thursday, which is a subscription service letting users download up to 1 million songs to their MP3 players for $15 per month.

"We think we have an incredible value proposition," says Alan Cohen, chief marketing officer for Napster, who is quoted in the article. "We think the 99-cent-download model will be a thing of the past."

Napster plans to spend $30 million on a six-month campaign for its new service.

Analysis: Well, they can kiss that $30 million goodbye. Who remembers Real's 49ยข song promo? We're sure none of the subscribers remember where they bought their tracks from - except they were cheap. Did they keep the subscribers? No. Somebody wanting a few iTunes tracks at 99 cents a pop doesn't want their credit card hit for $15 each month when they might not even use the service in some weeks. 1 million songs? Who has time to download that much music? Much less listen to it.
