An Eye for an Eye: Apple v. Napster
February 16th 2005
Even his Steveness has got involved in the nasty little brawl that's been iTunes v. Napster since Superbowl. According to the LA Times, Jobs has sent a corporate email around to the crew at 1 Infinite Loop.
"Thought you should know if you haven't heard about this," Jobs allegedly said in the email, referring to a security hole in Napster's music service. The email reportedly directed people to a web page which shows how Napster's file rentals can be turned into permanent downloads.
In reply, Napster CEO Chris Gorog said, without any apparent irony, that this wasn't news, and that converting the files was like taping songs and too time-consuming. So good old Gorog sent around an email directing people to a program with shows how iTunes tracks could be unlocked.
So far, this little exchange is only in-house. But don't flip channels.
