8800 GT coming for Mac Pro v1

When Apple announced the new Mac Pro on Jan 8, the company also began offering the nVidia 8800 GT upgrade kit ($349), which is otherwise standard equipment on the new towers.

What Apple didn't say, however, was that this stand-alone upgrade requires a Mac Pro that supports PCIe v2.0--only the new models.

According to both Engadget and AppleInsider this omission has ticked off more than a few users.

As you might expect, Apple doesn't plan on releasing a version for owners of v1.0 Mac Pro towers--they want you to buy a whole new Mac.

However, Engadget managed to get in contact with an nVidia PR director who said that company is "in the middle of bringing out an upgrade kit based on the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT solution for all Intel-based Mac Pros."

nVidia's PR wonk added that the 8800 GT for the Mac Pro v1.0 should be available in a couple weeks.

Editor's note: Both ATI and nVidia have promised quick turn around on upgrades in the past and disappointed more often than not. But, it's encouraging that at least a promise has been made...
