Mac online share continues rise

The last time Insanely-Great Mac posted online usage numbers for the Mac, 7.3 percent of those measured were running some version of the Mac OS.

Today, Net Applications has published internet market share data for January and it's once again looking good for the fairer platform as the Mac saw its corner of the web grow to 7.57 percent, up 0.27 points.

It's worth mentioning that the web metrics firm is no longer breaking out PPC and Intel Mac share numbers, but it's seems reasonable to believe the former represents an ever shrinking percentage.

As you can see from the above graphic, the iPhone saw its share tick up to 0.13 percent. That's just 0.1 percent more than last month.

On the browser front, Internet Explorer (75.47 percent) continues to lose share to both Firefox (16.98) and Safari (5.82). Opera and now-defunct Netscape round out the Top 5 at 0.62 and 0.61 percent, respectively.

Of course, it's worth saying again that today, February 1, AOL officially ended support for Netscape (long live Firefox!).

Editor's note: It looks like Mac sales will again rise this quarter, so it's perhaps just a matter of months before Microsoft operating systems account for less than 90 percent of online use.

That'll be a day worth celebrating...
