MBA regularly selling out
March 3rd 2008
Ars Technica, among a host of others, is reporting that the MacBook Air regularly sells out and in thin supply.
Spot checks by the publication found the MBA out-of-stock in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Moreover, Apple Store associates say that when they do get product it sell out quickly, though SSD-equipped units, which are considerably more expensive, don't sell out as fast.
Moreover, associates queried say the MBA is a "switcher device," attracting road warriors in search of the "leanest, meanest portable."
For its part, Amazon won't be shipping orders again until March 16 and the Apple Store still lists the MBA with five-to-seven day availability.
Editor's note: Call me cynical, but I suspect we're looking at a supply-constrained shortage and not an over abundance of demand. The MBA is after all very new in many ways, so component availability and quality control issues might be controlling factors.
iSuppli or another Asia-focussed researcher needs to look further into the phenomenon...
