Apple, Big Apple feud over logos
April 3rd 2008
Wired reports that Apple and the Big Apple are feuding over logos. The problem is New York City's GreeNYC logo, which the mothership says too closely resembles and thereupon infringes their own fruity image.
At issue is the emblem for New York City's GreeNYC campaign, which has started to appear around the city on bus shelters, hybrid gasoline-electric taxicabs and even Whole Foods shopping bags.
"The city believes that Apple's claims have no merit and that no consumer is likely to be confused," says Gerald Singleton, intellectual-property lawyer representing the city. "This well-known city is using its new design in a variety of contexts that have absolutely nothing to do with Apple Inc."
The city has applied for a trademark on the logo, but Apple has filed a formal opposition (.pdf via Wired).
Editor's note: It looks nothing like Apple's logo...
