Macs cheaper in the enterprise
June 3rd 2008
Ian Campbell, a return-on-investment (ROI) analyst, has published some preliminary data from an ongoing study regarding the operating costs of Macs and PCs in the enterprise.
In examining the habits of 1,700 employees in a mixed Mac / PC environment--he doesn't provide info on the precise mix--he found that:
• Mac users generating one-third fewer help desk tickets
• Mac trouble tickets go resolved 30% faster
Given that purchasing a computer is a one-time fixed cost and that support is an on-going expense, these snippets of information would seem indicate that Macs are cheaper over the long term.
Yes, a lot more than just help desk costs gets factored into an ROI analysis. Still, this is a very promising start.
I suspect Mssr Campbell will deliver a complete study that shows what the rest of us have known for years--Mac are cheaper to operate and deliver superior long-term value.
