Overclock your Mac Pro
June 28th 2008
I could be wrong, but last time there was a jumper-free overclocking utility for the Mac was 2004. Though limited to graphics, Thomas Perrier's ATIcelerator was a fast-n-easy way to get a little more out of your Mac without bruising a knuckle.
Thankfully, this drought has ended with a little help from unsere BrĂ¼der at ZDNet (Germany) whose ZDNet Clock tool can be used to boost processor, front-side bus (FSB), memory frequencies and, thereupon, performance.
The improvement in performance is quite remarkable. For example, the cheapest Mac Pro in the current series with a 2.80GHz processor runs significantly faster after overclocking than the most expensive at 3.20 GHz.
That's a 16% increase in performance without spending dollar one. Further, they report that overclocked systems are stable up to 3.24GHz and don't require voltage adjustments, which is one of the surest ways to tempt fate.
The only caveats at the moment are a 3.24GHz ceiling and the fact that only the Mac Pro and Xserve are compatible with ZDNet's tool.
Editor's note: Cool or what? Here's hoping someone extends ZDNet Clock to every Mac in Apple's Intel catalog soon...
