Mossberg, Pogue, Baig weigh in

When the original iPhone came out, Apple saw to it that four of its more reliable friends in the media had samples early--Walt Mossberg, David Pogue, Ed Baig and Steven Levy. With Levy somewhere between Newsweek and Wired, this time around it's fallen to the other three.

Here are the links to their full reviews and, for your immediate gratification, the conclusions therefrom:

Walt Mossberg, AllThingsD
"If you've been waiting to buy an iPhone until it dropped in price, or ran on faster cell networks, you might want to take the plunge, if you can live with the higher service costs and the weaker battery life ... [I]f you already own an iPhone, and can usually use Wi-Fi for data, you probably should hold off and get the free software upgrade before deciding whether it's worth getting the new hardware."

David Pogue, New York Times
"So the iPhone 3G is a nice upgrade. It more than keeps pace with advancing technology, and new buyers will generally be delighted ... But it's not so much better that it turns all those original iPhones into has-beens."

Ed Baig, USA Today
"While not everything on my wish list [Ed--Flash support, expandable memory, etc] made it onto the new device, Apple has raised the bar with iPhone 3G. To which I offer an enthusiastic thumbs up."

Neither Mossberg nor Pogue are particularly enthusiastic. However, it's interesting that all three men found roughly the same faults with the 3G iPhone, but came to very different conclusions.

Feeling swayed by any of these gentlemen? If yes, why?
