China slams door on iTunes 'protest'

Sydney Morning Herald reports that China has blocked access to iTunes following reports that Olympic athletes have been downloading and listening to an album of pro-Tibetan music, Songs for Tibet (iTunes), which includes music from Sting, Moby, Suzanne Vega, Alanis Morissette and other mostly A-list Western musicians.

JeninShanghai, a blogger that one assumes lives in Shanghai, has reposted a reply she purportedly received from Apple customer support after she reported problems with her US iTunes Store account.

"iTunes is not being blocked in China from our end, but access to the iTunes Store IS restricted in some areas in China. This would also explain why it's happening to your friends there as well."

Songs for Tibet was released on iTunes on Aug 5 and proceeds benefit the The Art of Peace
Foundation
, which supports "peace-related projects that are dear to the Dalai Lama."

Editor's note: Banned speech, holy land, religious strictures, nationalist invective... realms of unimaginatively inept and dangerously incompetent people everywhere.
