PsyStar calls Apple 'anticompetitive'

Dow Jones (CNN) reports that attorneys for Psystar have responded to Apple's suit against the clone maker, as well as filing a counter suit claiming the Mac maker's operating system End User License Agreement (EULA) violates US anti-trust laws.

"What we want to do is to provide an alternative, an option...It's not that people don't want to use Mac OS, many people are open to the idea, but they're not used to spending an exorbitant amount of money on something that is essentially generic hardware."

PsyStar says that Apple is illegally tying OS X to its own computer hardware, a strategy originally posited by the company's legal team earlier this month.

A real alternative?

Yesterday, an XLR8YourMac reader posted his impressions of the PsyStar Open Computer he just purchased.

"This is a very nice machine, even if it probably resembles a Dell or some other fairly standard PC," enthuses 'Jman.' "I can use Logic Pro or any other audio application that I use on my Mac Pro."

He says he got a dual-core 2GHz mini tower (4GB / 250GB / GeForce 7200GS 256MB / 20X DVD DL) for $719, including shipping. Moreover, unlike the initial OpenComputers shipped by PsyStar, which reviewers said were extremely noisy, Jman opines that his clone "is whisper quiet."

So, PsyStar's got product that doesn't suck and an aggressive, top-shelf legal team.

Is it time to start taking them seriously?
