iTunes to go 100% DRM-free Tuesday, Dec 9?
December 8th 2008
ElectronLibre (French, Google Translation) reports that Universal, Warner and Sony will finally allow their music to be sold on the iTunes Store without digital rights management.
As always, Apple is moving with caution. However, the signals are clear today. iTunes should offer catalogs of three majors Universal Music, SonyBMG Music and Waner rid of technological protection measures next Tuesday, Dec. 9. The transition to DRM Free should be at a global level.
The original report was posted last Wednesday, picked up by AppleInsider and the above translation is all there is--46 words in English. That's not a lot to go on, although there have been persistent rumors that a deal between Apple and the labels was close. Further, a number of Neil Young tracks (Warner) appeared in iTunes Plus (256K, DRM-free) over a week ago.
Editor's note: Hope it happens, though I'm not holding my breath just yet...
