Report: Intel expects Macs to begin move to ARM CPUs next year
February 21st 2019
Axios:
Although the company has yet to say so publicly, developers and Intel officials have privately told Axios they expect such a move as soon as next year.
I'm still not so sure about this one. Apple is heavily invested in custom CPUs based on ARM technology for its A-series processors found in iOS devices. And Apple has been making custom co-processor chips for the Mac, so it makes sense Apple want to have more control over Mac CPUs. While the ARM platform makes sense for lower-end laptops, it seems there's still a big gap performance found in higher-end Macs. For this to work, it would seem that Apple would need to maintain macOS on different platforms for years and potentially indefinitely.
