June 3rd 2019
Apple today previewed iOS 13, introducing a dramatic new look for iPhone with Dark Mode and new ways to browse and edit photos, sign in to apps and websites, and navigate the world with an all-new map. iOS 13 is faster and more responsive with optimizations across the system that improve app launch, reduce app download sizes and make Face ID even faster.
Apple is bringing Dark Mode to iOS with a similar dark gray themed interface that it offers in macOS.
Photos will better present photos to you based new curation machine learning. iOS will highlight the best photo from an event and present it on a timeline. iOS 13 also offers new photo editing capabilities and new lighting adjustments with Portrait photos.
Apple also announced a new Sign In service, allowing developers and creators to use Apple ID for account access. So rather than setting up a new account or going through Google or FaceBook, you could go through Apple with authentication using Face ID or Touch ID. The angle here is privacy and Apple gives controls over what personal info is used in account registration. interestingly, Apple will generate an obscured email address that's unique to each instance. All email sent to that address is forwarded and Apple said you will be able to shut it down if you no longer want to be contacted from that service. Another privacy feature is iOS 13 will allow users to grant location access one time to an app with it needed to request it again. Also, Apple said it is clamping down on apps using WiFi, Bluetooth, and other means to guestimate your location without authorization for tracking purposes.
Apple also updated its ongoing Maps improvements. Apple said it expected its revamped Maps to be available across the U.S. by the end fo 2019 and coming to additional countries in 2020.
Apple said HomePod will now distinguish between voices. This is very promising for households. Apple said it will deliver personal requests and tie music requests to an individual's Apple Music profile. Furthermore, Siri will be gaining access to over 100,000 radio stations from iHeartRadio, radio.com, and TuneIn.
Apple also said iOS 13 offers new performance improvements with app launches occurring up to twice as fast with 60-percent smaller apps.
