Apple announces new supports for independent repair shops

Apple today announced a new repair program, offering customers additional options for the most common out-of-warranty iPhone repairs. Apple will provide more independent repair businesses â€" large or small â€" with the same genuine parts, tools, training, repair manuals and diagnostics as its Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs). The program is launching in the US with plans to expand to other countries.

Apple has been under pressure with the right-to-repair movement. Apple tightly control's technical documentation, diagnostics tools, and parts, in addition to implementing measures to prevent unauthorized repairs. While Apple's stores and traditional authorized resellers are capable of repairing, it limits options for consumers. This may involve convienent locations, but also competitive rates. This program should expand options for customers.

Eligibility for the program requires, the business to have an Apple-certified technician. Apple offers certification for free.
